The basic grilled american cheese on white bread is delicious. You can’t deny the beauty of it’s simplicity. The combination of hot, buttery bread and gooey cheese is not only tasty, but it’s nostalgic. The grilled cheese can send us back to our childhood in one bite. You might argue that the basic grilled cheese is perfect just the way it is. I’d say that nothing is wrong with putting a new spin on an old favorite.
Today we’re sharing 5 simple tweaks to some favorite meals and recipes.
Swap your store-bought angel food cake for a freshly-baked scone. Wash and slice strawberries and pile them on top of a scone. Dollop whipped cream on top and you’re done! Using snickerdoodle or lemon cream cheese scone mix would add another fun twist.
Make a hybrid soup/pot pie for a warm and satisfying dinner. To start, make a batch of soup (any will work, but thicker ones are best) and grab a sheet of puff pastry. Ladle soup into individual ramekins and place a layer of puff pastry on top. Bake in the oven until the dough is flaky and cooked through.
Upgrade your baked potato by scooping cheesy broccoli soup into it while hot from the oven. Top with shredded cheddar and green onions.
Make your hot and cheesy spinach dip portable. Place wonton wrappers in greased muffin tins. Spoon prepared dip into each wonton wrapper and bake until dip is bubbly and wrapper is crisp. Top with a cherry tomato or more cheese.
A true classic never goes away. But how about that grill cheese we talked about earlier? Simply swapping out a different type of cheese could be enough of a change or how about grilling it with mayo instead of butter. A whole grain bread with sunflower seeds can add some texture and a creamy tomato soup is always the perfect companion. The moral of the story is don't be afraid to try something new, even when it comes to the classics you love.
