So make it early, so you are ready to start rolling it out when pie making time comes around.

Roll out one pie crust to fit your 9” pie plate. Make sure to roll in one direction at a time making every effort to make the crust even. Using flour to keep it from sticking to your counter and roller is a good idea, just use as little as possible. Roll out until you have about an inch overhang all around your pie plate. Place crust in your pie plate and refrigerate for 30 minutes while you prep the apples.

How To Top Your Apple Pie

How To Top Your Apple Pie

Roll out the remaining pie crust large enough to cover the top of the pie and the bottom edges. Tuck top pie crust under bottom piece and crimp edges together to create a seal. This is where you can be creative with your pie edges. Cut slits on top, brush with an egg white and generously sprinkle with sanding sugar. Pop the whole pie back in the refrigerator for another 30 minutes before baking.

Baking Your Apple Pie

Bake for 18 minutes at 400 then reduce temperature to 350 and bake for an additional 60 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on your pie crust. It can quickly brown. Shielding the edges or even the whole top with aluminum foil will keep it from browning too much.

Now light the grill, serve up dinner and save room for dessert. Reheat your pie pieces if you wish in the microwave to warm them up and add a little vanilla ice cream for an extra special treat. Your guests will be amazed at your pie making skills. Happy 4th of July!
